Synopsis
Manny, Sid, Diego and Ellie are back in this third film in the computer-animated "Ice Age" series. With those creatures in starring roles, fans also get another dose of the vocal talents of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Queen Latifah, who all return from the previous two outings.
Review
In 3D or not in 3D, Ice Age 3 delivers pretty much what you expect it to deliver. Fans of the first two will find much to keep them amused, entertained, and pleased with the latest happenings in the world of Manny, Sid and Diego. Along with the additional members of the team from last time, we are now introduced to a new character - the rather mind-muddled Buck (Simon Pegg). Being a mammal in a hidden dinosaur filled reserve (trapped under the ice, defying all logic, in a 'Lost World' kind of way), Buck is one cookie short from the jar, and harbour a sense of action, driven by his desire to seek out his dino-nemesis for an epic final battle.
When Sid accidentally finds the cave leading to the lost kingdom, and takes three eggs from it to raise as his kids (due to envy at Manny's impending fatherhood), the dino adventure begins. The mother of the young dinos comes to retrive them, taking Sid with her, which leads the rest of the gang to go and rescue him.
Ice Age 3 looks fantastic, and some moments are truely jaw-dropping visually (such as the sequence when Buck is telling about his brush with the most fearsome dino in existence). In 3D some scenes looks staggering, but as with films such as Bolt, Ice Age doesn't rely on the 3D to impress - it is there just as an additional element to add depth to events. Without the 3D the film still stand up as well. The interplay between the gang feels better than the last film, and Buck makes a welcome addition to the mix, offering some of the high points of comedy throughout.
I'd say that Dawn of the Dinosaurs feels like a better sequel than the second film was, and is a great film to treat the whole family to.
Trivia
- The largest Dinosaur, Rudy, is most likely a Suchomimus. Closely related to the Spinosaurus, which we know to be bigger than a T-Rex, Rudy is without the sail on its spine but instead has scales on its back, which cancels out him being a Baryonyx. The shape of its snout and the dimensions of its teeth further suggest this.
- Buck was based not just on Crocodile Dundee but also Frank Buck adventurer and actor in the 30s and 40s.
- Before Buck starts to escort the herd to rescue Sid in the underworld he says "abandon hope all ye who enter there", a reference to the inscription above the gates to hell according to Dante Alighieri, Italian poet and author of Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy).
- LOGO GIMMICK: The 20th Century Fox logo is surrounded by snow-covered pine trees, and the searchlights are miniature smoldering volcanoes.
